Delhi State Assembly Elections 2008 People’s Campaign
On 12th November, 2008 Alliance for People’s Rights (APR) formally launched its Delhi Election Campaign 2008 at India Women's Press Corps, New Delhi. APR announced its plans / activity during the 10 days, coverage of over 200 slums/resettlement colonies/JJ Clusters across Delhi and culmination on 25th to be attended by both community members/leaders and political parties / contestants.
The press conference was well attended by all forms of media. There was a healthy interaction between media and APR members. APR requested media fraternity to become part of the campaign and provide strength in amplifying the cries of children and urban poor in the coming elections. Several media houses have expressed its willingness to cover parts of campaign and culmination.
The 10 days community level mobilization and awareness campaign from 16th November, 2008 to 25th November, 2008 that would cover over 200 slums, JJ Clusters and Resettlement Colonies, has been planned in a phased manner. First Phase community leaders, community based organization (CBO), and community groups will be mobilized through combined meetings (16th November 2008 to 17th November 2008) to carry-out the campaign in their communities, Second Phase Nukkad meetings will be conducted in each community with large groups (17th November 2008 to 19th November 2008). In last phase Zonal meetings will be conducted in 20 zones across Delhi from 20th November 2008 to 24th November 2008. The detailed list will be available at www.aprdelhi.blogspot.com & www.electioncampaign2008.blogspot.com from 16th November 2008
The campaign is planned to mobilize people whose voice has been never heard. The whole campaign will be carried out by volunteers, community leaders and media persons. The purpose of this campaign is to make people aware of their rights as a voter and make political parties and their candidates accountable to them. For making our democracy more vibrant, there is a need for a dialogue between the voters and the contestants. Voters have a right to know if the contestants and their parties actually know about their problems and how they are going to address those issues.
Based on community meeting during Jan Haq Yatra (1–3 March 2008) and Jan Sangharsh Yatra (6–8 September 2008) the issues identified / demands by people for debating with political parties and contestant are; § Child Friendly Delhi § Adequate Housing for all § Basic Amenities in Slums § Livelihood & Social Security § Secured Delhi for Women § Identity & Dignity of nomads, sewage workers, labourers, migrants etc
The campaign will culminate in a public hearing on 25th November, 2008 at Jantar Mantar. Around 3000 people representing over 200 slums/resettlement colonies/ JJ Clusters across Delhi will interact and express their concerns with representatives of political parties/election candidates.

It stands for civil, human and democratic rights of Dalits, tribals, nomads, women & children, workers of unorganized sector and other sections of Indian society which are disadvantaged and marginalized as a result of privatization, globalization, and enslavement of toiling masses.
